Hypatia's Enclave

Fluency in the architecture of thought.

Deep within the ruins of a collapsed intelligence lies Hypatia's Enclave, a domain where circuitry and cognition are inseparable. To pass through it, delegates must prove fluency not only in code but in the architecture of thought itself: theory, logic, computation, and the discipline of tracing a mind that has gone astray.

The rounds

  1. 01

    Null Awakening

    • 2 to 3 delegates
    • Non-elimination

The Enclave opens with confrontation, pitting team against team in a live reckoning of instinct, logic and nerve. There is no room for quiet deliberation. This round rewards teams who think aloud, think fast, and think together, in a science-bowl format built from computer science questions.

    • Teams have 20 seconds to buzz in after a question is read.
    • Wait for the judge to acknowledge you before answering.
    • Team members may discuss quietly before answering.
    • Debugging challenge: identify and correct bugs in a problem displayed live.
    • Logic and pseudocode challenge: deduce the output or spot the logical fracture.
    • Rapid-fire challenge: core computer science principles under pressure.
  2. 02

    Ciphertext Protocol

    • 2 to 3 delegates
    • Elimination. The top 5 teams advance

Before its collapse, the intelligence scattered its last transmissions into fragments of cipher and static. Teams move between the wreckage station by station, coaxing meaning out of silence. Every fragment recovered brings you closer to the truth, and every fragment left unclaimed may fall to a rival.

    • Teams recover 5 to 10 encrypted fragments, escalating in difficulty, with a chained fragment where one answer becomes the key to the next.
    • Teams rotate physically between 2 to 4 rooms rather than working from one sheet.
    • Decode correctly but answer wrong and the question opens to other teams, who can steal the points.
    • Ciphers include binary, hex and ASCII, XOR with a key, frequency analysis, Caesar, ROT13, Atbash, ADFGX, A1Z26, Pigpen, Vigenere, Rail Fence, Bacon's cipher and Morse code.
  3. 03

    Root Access: Rebuild Protocol

    • 2 to 3 delegates
    • Final round. The highest cumulative rubric score wins

The corrupted intelligence has been dismantled, but its collapse left a real problem unsolved. Surviving teams use whatever tools remain, including the AI systems responsible for the collapse, to design, build and pitch a working solution before the Enclave closes for good.

    • Problem release, 10 minutes: three real-world problem statements, pick one, ask clarifying questions.
    • Build phase, 2 hours 30 minutes: design and build a functional prototype using Gemini.
    • Break, 15 minutes.
    • Pitch and Q&A, 5 minutes per team: roughly a 3-minute pitch and live demo, then judges' questions.
    • Gemini only. No other AI tools are permitted.
    • PC, Wi-Fi and IDE are provided, one setup per team.
    • Judged on functionality, problem understanding, pitch, Q&A performance and creativity.
    • Round details are subject to change.
